Dr.
Coleman is the only orthopaedist in N.W. Indiana
who is trained to perform total ankle replacement
surgery. To date, there is only one total ankle implant
FDA approved on the market – the Agility Total
Ankle System.
TAR can be used as an alternative to traditional
ankle fusion surgery in patients >50 years old
with documented arthritis. In fusion surgery, the
ankle joint is removed allowing the tibia (shin bone)
to grow together or fuse with the talus bone (the
large bone of the foot). Ankle fusion results in
loss of up and down movement of the foot. TAR allows
natural joint movement while providing pain relief.
The Agility Total Ankle System was designed by an
orthopedic surgeon to imitate the structure and movement
of the natural ankle joint.
1) TIBIAL COMPONENT - Consists of metal and plastic,
supports the tibia and fibula, allowing bone to grow
into it, holding the implant in place.
2) TALAR COMPONENT - Sits in talus and allows up/down
motion.
TAR is appropriate for patients with significant
arthritis that have not responded to more conservative
treatments. The most common diseases in the ankle
are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and post-traumatic
arthritis.
